What are the Remote Labs?
Students will participate in lab practicals using a combination of physical laboratories, remote/virtual laboratories and simulation software, to ensure they receive the required hands-on experience. Hands-on work and laboratory practicals are an essential component of EIT’s various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. EIT provides lab facilities to both on-campus and online students. These facilities offer students access to lab computers, industrial equipment, professional simulation and analysis software.
The labs allow students to remotely access lab computers in real time and interact with the industry-grade hardware and software attached to them. The Remote Labs are powered by Electromeet, which uses a scheduling system to avoid conflicting access to the labs. To avoid long queuing times, hardware and software are duplicated on various computers.
Software:
The computer and equipment labs consist of relevant software and hardware for students’ courses. The installed software packages allow for various simulations, calculations and analysis activities to be performed.
Hardware:
The hardware equipment connected to most of the computers, both industrial and educational, allows students to perform real implementation of engineering activities by interfacing the computers, software and simulators to real-world hardware.
Booking and accessing a lab:
Students have the opportunity to access the computer labs directly from the lab area on-campus, or via remote online connections. This allows students and lecturers to use the local or remote labs during scheduled classroom sessions, outside of classroom sessions, or after hours via remote online access.
Students can access the EIT Remote Labs via Moodle. There will be a link from each unit/course page, or type “Remote Labs” into your Moodle search bar.
The Remote Labs page on Moodle has full instructions on how to book a lab.
Remote Labs help:
Detailed instructions can be found on the Remote Labs page on Moodle. We also have a list of frequently asked questions.
The Remote Labs team is available to assist students with any technical issues. Complete the support form on the Remote Labs page on Moodle and a member of the team will get back to you. Please remember to include
- Your course/unit/module code
- The assessment you are attempting to complete
- Any screenshots of the error/issue
