Sharing research is a vital part of scholarly practice. Publishing your work allows you to contribute to the engineering knowledge base, build your academic profile, and demonstrate the practical value of your findings. This section guides EIT students and staff through the key pathways for publishing, presenting, and disseminating research. 

Publishing your research: 

  • Contributes to global engineering knowledge 
  • Demonstrates scholarly and professional impact 
  • Enhances your academic and industry reputation 
  • Allows external validation of your work 
  • Supports career progression and accreditation pathways (AQF 8–10) 

For postgraduate and HDR candidates, dissemination is also an integral assessment requirement. 

EIT researchers may publish and disseminate through multiple channels:

When choosing where to publish, consider: 

Credibility 

  • Indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, or ERA-recognised lists 
  • Affiliated with reputable professional bodies (e.g., IEEE, Engineers Australia, ASME) 

Scope and Audience 

  • Does the journal/conference align with your engineering discipline or research problem? 
  • Who is the audience – academic, industry, policy, education? 

Open Access vs Subscription 

  • Open Access increases visibility, but may involve Article Processing Charges (APCs) 
  • Subscription journals may have higher perceived prestige in certain fields 

Avoiding Predatory Publishing 

  • Check the publisher’s editorial practices, review process, and indexing 
  • Use tools like Think.Check.Submit 
  • Seek supervisor or Research Office guidance 

Structure and Formatting 

  • Follow the target journal or conference template 
  • Ensure clarity, appropriate technical depth, and strong argumentation 
  • Use standard engineering conventions and units 

Academic Integrity 

  • Cite all sources accurately 
  • Avoid duplicate publication 
  • Ensure authenticity of data and avoid manipulation

Authorship 

  • Determine authorship early in the project

The peer-review process strengthens research quality through independent evaluation. 

What to Expect 

  • Manuscripts may go through single-blind, double-blind, or open review 
  • Reviewers may request revisions or clarifications 
  • Rejections are common, use feedback constructively 

Responding to Reviewers 

  • Provide a clear, point-by-point response 
  • Acknowledge limitations and justify methodological decisions 
  • Maintain professional tone 

Know Your Rights 

  • Many publishers require authors to transfer copyright 
  • Open Access models may allow you to retain rights via Creative Commons licenses 
  • Always read the publication agreement before signing
